Getting Started
Where do we want to get started here? There are many questions you may be asking in regards to that. Do you want to be in a guild before joining a server or after. There are pros and cons of both.
Pro: You know where to start you character from scratch
Con: Its a possibility that you won't be able to have the name you want if you are only restricted to that particular server that your guild is on.
Choosing a Server
If you are not part of a guild yet and have no idea what servers are out there. Check this list out. They have a variety of servers and as time moves on, they should be adding more. You do have a choice between server types. There is RP, PVE, RP-PVE, RP-PVP, PVE.
You may not know what some of these abbreviations are so here goes:
- RP - Roleplaying
- PVP - Player vs. player
- PVE - Player vs. Environment
Character Creation
Next up is character creations. There is some customizations, but not a whole lot. Some games have more and some have less. This is also where you get to create a character name for yourself. It will either go through or it will not. People may come up with same names. If that happens, you have 2 choices. The first choice is to come up with a new name. The second choice you have is change servers until you find one that has the name you are looking for. There are people out there that are squatting names like crazy on all servers so you may be out of luck when it comes time for you to create your character.
Look at the list below as to what path you want to take. It should give you a general idea based off what you want to do with your character. As you can tell with the different classes, there really are dual roles. There is a total of 8 classes between the two factions. The classes are Trooper, Smuggler, Knight, Consular, Imperial Agent, Warrior, Bounty Hunter, and Inquisitor. You also are given the option to choose what species you want to be. The Next Step
Now that we have managed to get the groundwork done here, lets get started. Most of the functions are rather self explanatory. You can move your character with arrow or the asdf keys and etc. If you have played other MMOs, a lot of the keys are similar. K may an example of a common button used for skills between MMOs. Its the same key at least that STO has for the same function.
The chatting aspect is different but may be similar to most MMOs. There is a function of /g which is for the guild chat. Though I am not so used to that due to the fact that STO was not like that. In all, does not look so bad.
Then there is the Map function. You can access the map by pressing M. What I actually like about that is when you are trying to find a place on the map while moving you can press the M and travel with the map with you and follow it along. It just blends in with the background as you travel.
If you have played almost any other MMO everything is self explanatory. Quests usually show up on the right but also there is a button to hit in the UI to open it up.
Companions
In the course of the game you will get companions. When you get your companion really does depend on the path you take. You do get up to 5 companions. You don't get to choose them though.
Crew Skills
You will notice that there were recommending crafting, gathering and mission skills to choose from. Together, they make up the crew skills. Around Level 10 once you go to the republic fleet, you can choose them. You can go there sooner, but for the first character, it is suggested to not do that. You will get a mission that is asking you to explore all of that. You will get points for that. Once you view them all, they you should choose your skills. You can only have one crafting skill, but you can mix the other 2 up. In all, you can have a total of 3 skills. Its also possible to choose three gathering or three mission skills, but you can still only have at max three skills. The only skill that you can have only one is the crafting skill.
