Novels and Stories

Novels and stories are relatively the same thing. They all tell stories, but there are are at least a couple varieties. Novel is one of them and then there are short stories. If you are also looking for a smaller version of a novel, there are also novellas.

Telling A Story

No matter which way you go, you are telling a story based off of how many words you use. Short stories, you are limited to so many characters so they are not that long. A short story can be anything from 1 page and longer. I have written some really short one where they were a couple pages and then there were the ones that I had written that were about 15 pages.

When it comes to novel. they are more detailed than a short story. A typical novel can be about 50,000 words or more. You usually have more characters in the story and relationships can be more complicated. Novels can be very hard to write compared to writing short stories as sometimes you can get writers block. There are ways around that though.  Sometimes having different angle is the way to go.  The best thing for a writer to finish a novel is not edit the novel and just write and not worry about things being  correct.  That is what the second draft is all about.

That is something that is very true and that is something that I need to take to heart to finish my novel that I am currently working on. Basically this is why it needs to be like that, if you write out the novel from start to finish, you will finish your novel. If you worry about grammar and spelling, the first draft will never be finished. It should be a smooth ride once you go to the second draft.

It is something that was said over at nanowrimo. I participated in it last november.
