Bowling Rules

Bowling is a game that I have enjoyed as long as I could remember. There was even a time that I used to bowl in my socks because the bowling shoes were way to small for me.  I used to bowl in bowling leagues and plan on going back when money is better for me.  I had about a 120-130 average.  That varies based on how well I bowled in any given night.  It is a game I have always enjoyed and I am always trying to improve on my best score.  Bowling after all is a game for people of all ages.

What Do You Need To Bowl?

This is what you need:

  • Bowling Ball
  • Shoes
  • Yourself

Balls and shoes are usually available at the bowling alley. You rent the shoes but the balls are free to use. If you are a bowler like me, then you have your own equipment. Honestly, I love having my own stuff as its made for me. Obviously, I am more comfortable with having my own bowling ball and shoes.

Setting Up

Now that you have your items, then you head to your lane or lanes. When you bowl in a league, you have to deal with 2 lanes. If you are just playing for fun, you only bowl with only one lane unless you are a big group of people.

When you get to your lane, there is a place on the lane that you can put your ball in. I call it a carrier. That is where you would put your ball in. There is one thing I will tell you though when it comes to bowling. When the ball returns to the carrier, never put your hands by where the balls return even if the ball is stuck. You are bound to get hurt and I not talking about simple hurt, but more than that. You can really hurt your hand. The best thing to do is get an employee of the bowling alley to take care of it.

The Approach

This is the area right next to the ball return/ball carrier.  This is where you start bowling at.  If you are new to the game, you do go with a 4 or 5 step approach.  You usually just bowl.  If you are anything like me, I have a 4 step approach.  I am not going to go into the whole approach things.  It is something that is a bit hard to explain as your arms and hands have to be in a certain area at different steps.

Bowling Etiquette

People whom are new to the game, have no idea that there is a bowling etiquette.  They just think that they can just bowl.  That is not true.  Here is the etiquette:

  • Never bowl at the same exact time as the person in the next lane.  This is the good way that the lane or lanes break down.
  • If there are two people, always let the person on the left go first.  If there is nobody there, then go ahead and bowl.

Putting Your fingers in the Ball

Its really not that hard to put your fingers in the ball once you knw where your fingers are supposed to go.  You ring finger and the finger next to it go to the top 2 wholes and your thumb goes to the bottom one.

Scoring

For me, it is second nature when it comes to scoring. I understand the strikes and spares, but I am not fast when it comes to adding math. I am not good at math, so I pretty much need a calculator to stay on top of the scoring. Even though it is easy math, it can be complicated when there are a lot of open frames.

When it comes to scoring, you bowl 10 frames which make one game. Each frame you have two chances to knock over all of the pins.

The way you score strikes are 10 plus the next two balls. For spares its 10 plus the next ball. Open frames you just add the two balls together.

The highest score you can get in the game is 300 which can be very hard to get.  Some people are lucky.  Bowling is a game of skill and luck, but it is fun.

Very good article for beginners and intermediate bowlers alike. Looking forward to learning how to finally throw a hook like the pros.

Good information Melissa. I've been bowling for a long time and believe that bowling etiquette is something that all new bowlers should be taught immediately.

I've been thinking about bowling lately but where to begin. My children played when they were teenagers even in a school league. Then my son has a friend that turned this hobby into a money maker. It sounds like a lot of fun.

The etiquette is a great suggestion too - because a newbie may not be so observant.

OK - it's on my list of fun things to do!
